![]() ![]() Beyond the initial moves of setting up archery volleys, cavalry flanking, and waiting until you tell infantry to charge, you pretty much let the AI go to town. The reason why warband works so well is because the units are mostly autonomous, and the strategy is way watered down compared to total war. Think how bad battle-looting messes up the flow of combat in Skyrim and Fallout, now imagine it being worse as every second you're swinging a sword, your archers are getting eaten by cav. If you do have to micromanage troop movements, that's definitely going to take away from the fun of the up-close murderfest. So the best would be to just watch the gameplay: It's a bit hard to explain a unique game because there's no real comparisons I could draw. It was a great game, and it saddens me endlessly that they discontinued Kessen, IMO KOEI's best franchise, and instead shat out a million Dynasty Warriors clones. So they fuse all three and what you got was a game where you controlled the strategy layer by assigning orders to several generals at once, while you personally controlled a unit within the overall army with the option to zoom down and control them manually in both the strategy layer and in 3rd person action mode. Their quality varies from game to game as they always try different mechanics, but they're all good in their own ways.ĭynasty Warriors nailed the 3rd person action, and was not yet overly repetitive back in 2004.ĭynasty Tactics nailed the strategic layer of battles with flanking, unit abilities, morale, individualized stats based on general characters Nobunaga's Ambition and Romance of the Three Kingdoms games were good grand strategy games. It's a very old game, but it worked because at the time KOEI had three franchises which nailed their individual aspects: The best fusion I've personally played was Kessen III for the PS2. ![]()
